As the new Christmas season approaches, Mariah Carey’s classic “All I Want For Christmas” plays throughout the month of December. Whether you hear it on the speakers of your favorite store or just jamming out to it in your car, Mariah Carey’s vocals in the song boosts the holiday spirit.
Carey’s song “All I Want For Christmas” has topped the Billboard Holiday 100 charts for a record of 58 cumulative weeks of the total of 63 weeks since the list launched in 2011.
“The song is very catchy. You know the words to it because it is played everywhere,” junior Jasmiyah Hamilton said. “You can get into the song even though you might not be able to hit the high notes. Her song never gets old and always sticks around I think for that reason.”
Carey’s song has become a tradition to many people, and to let people know it’s an acceptable time to listen to Christmas music, she posts a video singing “It’s time.” This year, she made a video where she melted out of a block of ice.
“The more people that hear it, the more people start to listen to it,” sophomore Nyreah Chatman said. “People influence what we as a generation listen to. Over the years the song became, and yet it still becomes popular.”
Because “All I Want For Christmas” stands among many Christmas songs, it is a lot of people’s favorite.
“It isn’t like other Christmas songs,” junior Laila Crowe said. “I feel that her vocals show emotion. It is more about falling in love and finding true love, not about just preparing for Christmas.”
Some people can hear the difference and impact of Carey’s Christmas song, unlike others.
“I feel like other Christmas songs are slower or just about getting ready for the Christmas holiday,” sophomore Peyton Shaw said. “The song is faster and more for our generation.”
Listening to Mariah Carey during Christmas time has become something that many look forward to.
“It is a traditional song,” Shaw said. “I wouldn’t say it is an old song, but everyone has heard it. It is a great way to get you in the holiday vibes.”
