Science Department Chair Kelly Rowland has received a grant from International Paper to buy equipment so that her Environmental Science students can become Texas Stream Team members.
“The Texas Stream Team takes data from streams all over Texas to monitor water quality,” Rowland said. “We will be using the section of Cowhorn Creek on the back of the school property.”
Rowland’s grant of $3,240 will buy sampling equipment that will be utilized for years to come and benefit not just Environmental Science students but all of the science classes.
“International Paper has been a sponsor of grants and financial opportunities for teachers and we have received some in the past,” Rowland said. “This not something for just Environmental Science; Mr. Upchurch has done it before. We just had to find the right project to write the grant proposal for.”
The new sampling equipment will allow students to work outside and get good hands-on experience.
“They were excited about getting to do something in the field,” Rowland said. “Being able to purchase the equipment will allow them to get wet and dirty.”
