On December 10th, Texas high schools choirs treated elementary school students from four different schools to a special holiday performance. The event, which took place at Spring Lake Park elementary, Nash elementary, Morriss elementary, Westlawn elementary, was a heartwarming celebration of music and the holidays.
“I really enjoyed singing with the High Schoolers,” said 5th Grader Elizabeth Kyle, “It really gets us in the mood for the holidays.”
The high school choirs, consisting of talented students from High School and Middle School, performed a variety of festive songs, including classic carols and modern holiday tunes. The elementary school students, who were visibly excited and engaged throughout the performance, sang along to the familiar melodies and even joined in for a few numbers.
“I like how they form together to sing in good Harmony” said 5th Grader Lizzy LeGron “ These songs remind me of my family and how much I miss them, I’m glad I get to see them for christmas.”
According to the event organizers, the goal of the performance was to provide an opportunity for the elementary school students to experience the joy of live music and to inspire a love of singing and performance.
“The purpose of this event is to bring music and holiday cheer to kids across multiple elementary schools.” said Senior Salem Alonge “I really am excited to see these kids who may be inspired by us to take choir later in their lives.”
Some special songs that were performed were Carol of the Bells, White Winter Hymnal, Peace Peace, and Nutcracker Jingles, which has been practiced for weeks by the choir. These hit classics have been sung annually and continue to be a silent tradition at TISD.
“I like the passion of singing,” said Freshman Victoria Carmen “It’s really fun to be able to share with people and sing with students who share the same goals as I do. I will continue to sing in the choir throughout my high school.”
Overall, the performance was applauded by kids of all ages. With choir competition starting up in January, This performance on December 10th was a glowing example of joy that can be brought by music into students’ lives.
“We enjoy making kids happy,” said sophomore Melanie Mutoke “I started doing this in the 6th grade and enjoyed learning so much from teachers and seniors. Everyone should love their own voice”
