Anticipatory chatter fills the halls as the sound of hundreds of footsteps echoes throughout the building. Across the campus, a slightly daunting yet exciting change is introduced to newcomers.
On Saturday, Aug. 3, Texas High School held the annual Tiger Camp for incoming freshmen. A lasting tradition at THS, Tiger Camp prepares freshmen for their first year of high school while also getting them familiar with the campus grounds.
“I’ve gotten to see some places that I didn’t even know were on campus,” freshman Larry Glass said. “I also got to see where some of my classes are, which is going to help me on the first day.”
Tiger Camp offers several opportunities for incoming freshmen to learn about the Texas High culture. From playing fun games to mapping out the campus, the new students immersed themselves into the school’s traditions.
“I feel really prepared,” freshman Nirav Pyne said. “It was fun hanging out and playing the games, plus I got to learn the line dance.”
As a student-led event, Tiger Camp requires collaboration among the student body and faculty.
“It takes a lot of teamwork between the staff and the students to make Tiger Camp possible,” senior Bryce DePriest said. “It also takes a lot of student responsibility to get everything together and make sure the kids are where they need to be.”
