On Saturday, Oct. 12 at 6:00 p.m., the annual Miss Texas High pageant will take place in the John Thomas Sullivan Performing Arts Center at Texas High School.
Hosted by Stacy J. Mayo, this annual beauty pageant benefits the contestants by giving them a special opportunity to dress up and feel beautiful in their outfits. The girls who compete also have the opportunity to win hundreds and thousands of dollars in scholarship money.
“[The young ladies that compete in the Miss Texas High pageant have the opportunity to receive] $12,000 [in scholarship money] from Texas A&M Texarkana, Mayo said. “Also, a total of $1775 for cash prizes will go to the girls that win special awards [such as talent, congeniality, interview, and outfit].”
In 2001, Mayo earned the title of Miss Texas, and that experience served as her driving force when it came to bringing back the pageant. As a pageant girl herself, Mayo believes that pageantry goes far beyond the crown, and she knows the benefits of participating in pageants from firsthand experience.
“Communication skills are lacking because of social media and cell phones,” Mayo said. “The pageant gives these young ladies an opportunity to hone those skills that can be used way after pageants.”
Although the beauty and depth of pageantry serve as an incredibly special place in her heart, Mayo understands and respects those girls who decide not to participate.
“Not every girl is brave enough to get on stage in front of her peers and do in beauty pageant],”
Mayo said. “Those that do [have the courage to participate in pageants) have my utmost respect.”
Tickets for this event may be purchased at the door for $5 each, and the pageant will begin at
7 p.m. this Saturday, Oct. 12, 2024.
