Tigers take lead, kick it to win
The boys varsity soccer team defeated Sulphur Springs 2-1 during senior night on Tuesday.
“I feel it went very well,” junior Cooper Zverina said. “I feel like we actually played very well together. Our passes were connecting, the defense was great and they kept strong. We just played great today.”
The game started off with a lead, with 37 minutes left the first goal of the game was scored by senior Skyler Height, assisting him was junior Roger Moreno.
Then with 26 minutes left the second goal for Texas High was scored by sophomore Alex Hernandez, assisting by Axel Contreras.
“I think we started off really good, after we put two in we kind of lost focus for a little bit but after halftime we got gained it back and gave it our all until the last minute,” Hernandez said. “At first we didn’t really think about this being our last home game. We just said it was just another game, but then at the end in the locker room we were like this is the second to the last game we will play with the seniors, and it’s kind of emotional because I’ve grown really close to most of them.”
Sulphur Springs scored their first goal with 17 minutes left, going into halftime with a score of 2-1.
With 5 minutes left in the game senior Mantas Urniezius received a red card.
“It was a little bittersweet playing this game, I’m glad it was with all my guys,” Urniezius said. “I just wasn’t proud I got a red card, I feel like I should more responsible than that. I feel like these guys put in so much effort this game, it’s probably going to be one of the best games we’ve played all year.”
With 1 minute left Sulphur Springs kicked a penalty kick, but the Tiger’s goalie, Zverina saved it.
“It happened pretty fast, I just knew if I didn’t catch it we might not have been able to come back in the short amount of time we had left.” Zverina said. “I feel it went very well, I feel like we actually played very well together, our passes were connecting, the defense was great and they kept strong, we just played great today.”
