COLLEGE STATION — Twenty teammates, eight courts, and an unlimited amount of tennis balls are some of the statistics that lined Wednesday’s activities. However, the only number that mattered to the Tigers was 10. Ten match points and the state finals would be reached.

Beginning with a delay shortly into warmups, the natural elements provided even more adversity for the Tigers to overcome.

“I was excited, but yet a little nervous,” junior tennis player Cullen Schoen said. “I was ready to get a win with my team.”

With all doubles matches on first, the overall momentum was decided early on allowing the Tigers to either take a lead or fall behind. They found themselves on the latter side, losing 0-6 to Grapevine High.

Ultimately, the singles matches provided the same outcome for the Tigers, taking a 0-10 loss. This capped off the historical season, making the 2015 fall Tiger tennis team the first team in Texas High history to reach state as a team.

“We made it to state, made it to the final four. That itself is a great accomplishment,” head tennis coach Tom Faulkner said. “We learned so much as a team this year that I hope this will carry on for years to come.”

A team full of upperclassmen will look to continue this success and carry over into the 2016 spring season.

“Everyday in practice from here on out, I will reference the day we lost to Grapevine because of how hard they fought,” Faulkner said. “We will look to play as hard as these guys, because if you can, you can go win a state championship which is what we look to do in the spring.”
