Hallsville offense overcomes Tiger defense to win 8-3

The Lady Tigers fell to the Lady Bobcats of Hallsville 8-3 in their fourth district game March 22. The loss evened their district record to 2-2. 

To begin the first inning, sophomore Mollie Fisher lined out to right field, followed by a groundout to the pitcher by senior Valeria Perez. A walk was administered to junior Emma Prince. Senior Lauren Allred hit a hard ground ball through the third base and shortstop gap, and advanced to second on the Bobcat’s attempt to throw out Prince at third. Sophomore Mally Lumpkin scored the two base runners on a hard ground ball to right field. Senior Lizzie Smith produced another hit, a ground ball to centerfield. Lumpkin attempted to take home plate, but was thrown out to close the inning.

The Bobcats leadoff batter boarded on a walk. Sophomore Sara Houston doubled to center field, leaving two runners in scoring position at second and third. Another fly ball was hit to center, but was dropped by center fielder Perez. The Bobcats scored one run on the error, and had still had runners at second and third. The Lady Cats clean up hitter Nelson laid down a bunt, the batter reached on an error at first and one run scored on the same error. The runner advanced to second on the throw home. A line drive to center field scored one more run for the Bobcats, and another run scored on a pop fly to center. Line out to shortstop Fisher closed the first inning. At the bottom of the first the Bobcats lead the Tigers 4-2.

A walk for sophomore Caitlin Salisbury got the Tigers a leadoff base runner in the top of the second. After two strikeouts, Fisher scored Salisbury with a triple to left field. Perez grounded out to second base to close the inning. 

Smith walked the leadoff Bobcat batter, however, the runner was left stranded after three pop outs. At the end of the second, the Bobcats held onto a 4-3 lead over the Tigers.

Prince started the third inning with a ground out to third base, followed by ground out to second by Allred. Lumpkin got on base with a ground ball to center field, but was picked off at first by catcher Miley Stovall to close the inning. 

The Bobcats leadoff batter popped out Allred behind the plate to open the top of the third. A pop out to Lumpkin at second was followed by a ground ball to left field. The runner at first was caught stealing second, thrown out by catcher Allred. The score remained 4-3 after the third inning. 

To start the fourth inning, Smith hit a hard ground ball to the Bobcat third baseman, who misplayed the ball, and was thrown out by the shortstop. A strikeout and groundout to the shortstop closed the top of the fourth for the Tigers.

The Bobcats boarded their leadoff batter with another leadoff walk in the bottom of the fourth. The Lady Cats followed the walk up with a hard hit line drive to right field. The Tiger’s right fielder misplayed the linedrive, resulting in an error, and the Bobcats moved two runners into scoring position. Despite the error, the Tigers got out of the inning with a popout and two strikeouts. 

The Lady Bobcats got out of the top of the fifth inning three-up-three-down with a strikeout, a lineout, and a groundout.

The Lady Cats overcame the Tiger defense in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Lady Cats started the inning with a hit to right field by third batter Menchue. The right fielder made an error on another ball hit to right, leaving Hallsville with runners on second and third. Stovall laid down the Lady second bunt of the night, an overthrow to third base resulted in another run scoring for Hallsville. With runners on first and third, A sky high fly ball was dropped by second baseman Lumpkin, scoring another Lady Cat run. A ball was hit off the wall by Walker for the Bobcats, scoring one run, however, the Tigers threw out a runner at third to get out of the inning. At the end of the sixth inning, the Bobcats led 7-3.

Prince took a strikeout looking to open the sixth inning. Allred grounded out to second base, followed by back-to-back walks for Lumpkin and Smith. Salisbury closed the top of the sixth with a strikeout.

Smith threw a ground ball to get the Bobcat’s ninth batter, Sawyers, out. A home run by leadoff batter senior Mallory Pyle put another run on the board for the Lady Cats. The Tigers got out of the bottom of the sixth inning with a flyout to Lee in right field and a ground out to Smith in the circle. 

The Tigers were shut out in the top of the seventh with two strikeouts and a ground ball to second. The Lady Bobcats took the win 8-3.
