Excited children stand in line as they are signed in for the annual cheer and basketball camp clinic. Future Texas High students from ages 5 to 14 participated in the basketball and cheer camp hosted on Dec. 10, 2023.
Tiger cheer coordinated and demonstrated a dance to the younger group of girls, which they will be performing Dec. 12, 2023 during pregame. They also introduced the young cheerleaders to basic skills and team bonding. The tiger basketball team incorporated skill work to help enhance gametime IQ, ball handling and shooting for future tiger hoops.
“So we are doing a combination camp with the boys basketball team, and we will be teaching the girls basic cheer skills, motions, jumps and those kinds of things,” cheer coach Courtney Waldrep said. “They’re also learning a dance and cheer to perform at the pregame of this week’s varsity boys game.”
This was the first combination camp held since the pandemic in 2020, and the turn out for the event surpassed expectations.
“Before covid we did a version of this clinic every year and then we had three years where it got canceled because of kids getting sick,” Waldrep said. “So this is our first year doing it after the pandemic and just seeing all the kids that showed up was amazing.”
This camp allowed younger students to interact with people who have the same interests as them while connecting with their superiors.
“I feel like this camp shows them kind of what it’s like and how we interact and how we work together as a team,” junior Kamryn Miles said.
The Tiger basketball team also hosted a clinic for young boys, allowing them to show off their skills while learning more about game IQ.
“This camp really just allows the kids to learn better work ethic and skills and have something to look forward to in the future,” junior Alex Orr. “I’m excited to see what these kids can bring to the table for the future of tiger basketball.”
