In a tough and closely contested match, the Texas High varsity volleyball team faced a disappointing loss against Lufkin on Aug. 27, despite putting up a valiant effort. From the first serve to the final point, the Lady Tigers fought hard, showcasing their resilience and determination; however, despite several standout performances and moments on the court, they ultimately fell short, unable to secure the win. The team left it all on the court, but they gained valuable lessons to carry forward into the rest of the season.
“I felt like it was good. There were a few hiccups in the game, but you know, overall it was a pretty good game.” defensive specialist Sydney Woods said. “I think we definitely could’ve been more disciplined on what we were doing. That’s with everything—passing, blocking and hitting.”
After the match, the team took time to assess their performance, recognizing both their strengths and the areas needing improvement. The Lady Tigers’ commitment to learning and growing from each game was evident as they analyzed the details of their play, striving for greater consistency and precision on the court.
“I just kind of smiled like, no big deal—next point. There’s always going to be pressure, no matter who you are or what game you’re in.” senior Carlyn Clack said. “A game is a game—you’re either going to win or lose, and there’s always pressure. So I just tell myself, okay, next point, next ball, whatever. It doesn’t matter.”
The ability to stay composed under pressure reflects the mental toughness that is essential in volleyball. This mindset is crucial not just for those on the court, but also for players who, despite being sidelined by injury, remain deeply connected to the game.
Even when she isn’t playing, injured player Deja Aubrey’s connection to volleyball runs deep. Aubrey has been surrounded by the sport from a young age, making her journey into volleyball almost inevitable. This strong family influence not only sparked her interest but also provided her with a solid foundation in the sport’s fundamentals and culture.
“My mom is a coach, and so is my grandma,” Aubrey said. “I have been playing since sixth grade, and I really love it.”
The Lady Tigers continue to demonstrate their commitment to growth and success. This confidence and determination will drive them forward as they continue to push their limits and strive for victory throughout the season.
“We’ll beat you next time,” Woods said. “Keep working and trust the process.”
