The Texas Tigers kicked off the season strong at the first home game after taking victory 37-13 against the Tyler Legacy Raiders on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2024.
Despite threatening lightning and the collapse of the inflatable run-through tunnel due to weather conditions, the Tigers limited the Red Raiders offensively and scored on offense and defensively. Our defensive playing allowed us to advance even further in the game.
Roughly nine minutes into the first quarter, the Tigers scored a touchdown on a slant route pass from senior quarterback David J. Potter to junior receiver Shavante Montgomery to put Texas High on the scoreboard first, and they would never relinquish the lead in the game. The touchdown and subsequent point-after-attempt put the Tigers up 7-0.
Among many motion and offside penalties early in the first half, the Tigers capitalized on the Red Raiders’ errors, ultimately allowing them to jump ahead 21-0 by halftime.
“There’s a lot of errors and mistakes that we made that are mental errors,” head coach Gerry Stanford said. “Overall, I thought we were extremely physical and played with great effort against a 6A football team.”
In terms of defensive production, the Tigers kept the Red Raiders off the scoreboard until the fourth quarter and put points on the board after blocking an extra point attempt and running it 95 yards for a safety.
“This was a good little kick-off,” senior defensive back Kendrevion Boyce said. “[Our] strengths this game [were robbing] receivers and watching the routes.”
Overall, players and coaches remain extremely satisfied with the outcome of yesterday’s game and look forward to polishing their techniques and working even harder towards the victories of upcoming games this season.
“We’re happy to have the win under our belt,” Stanford said. “It’s a great thing to look at and clean up a lot of things.”
