Texas High travels to Argyle, Texas, to play the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) Division II State Champions, the Liberty Christian Warriors, on Friday, Sept. 6, 2024. Their head coach and former Dallas Cowboy tight end, Jason Witten, leads the warriors in his 5th year as head coach.
Although the Tigers and the Warriors have achieved winning records in recent years and faced quality opponents who tested their physicality and talent, each team can expect the unexpected from the other this week. Since this is the first time the teams have played each other, there is an aire of mystery surrounding the matchup.
“Liberty Christian and private schools in general, it’s just there’s no historical relevance for what we’re walking into,” head football coach and Athletic Director Gerry Stanford said. “We don’t know their players, [and] they don’t know ours outside of social media and film.”
Unlike public schools, private schools are able to recruit athletes all year and move them in and out. Their Qauterback, Quinn Murphy, who moved from Austin is now committed to the University of Baylor Bears.
“We’ve seen a lot of their guys on film. We’ve done a lot of research on them. [They] all have division one offers,” Jodi Aubrey, cornerback coach said. “We can’t have any bust where some guy just isn’t where he’s supposed to be, so if we are comfortable with the assignment, then we should do pretty well.”
The Tigers’ win last Thursday brought new confidence on the field. Many players are anticipating a good game and hope to maintain that confidence throughout the season.
“[We expect] a lot of quick passes. We’ve been watching film, and seeing what he likes to do,” Kendravion Boyce, defensive back said. “I got faith in my teammates that if we just go out and do our job we should come out with the win.”
