Maria Rangel is a first-year staff writer for Texas High Publications. Though she is in her last year of high school, she has finally decided to exhibit her love for writing (not to mention, skill) by becoming part of the newspaper team. Motivated by academic achievement, her schedule is riddled with AP and DC classes, her psyche is consistently plagued by feelings of incompetence and thoughts about her future, and she’s always working on something since the thought of not being productive repulses her to no end. Some would say she is the walking example of why zeal and studiousness don’t mix. As if the stress wasn’t enough, she realizes that the weight of college applications will drape gloomily over her shoulders for the next three months. Past giving herself persistent headaches, Maria enjoys reading and annotating books (call her crazy, but it makes reading that much more enriching), watching cooking videos on Youtube and developing her architectural skills by playing Minecraft nearly every day because it’s one of the most timeless video games of the era. This year, she hopes to write about current issues in Texarkana and beyond, enriching the minds of Texas High readers by writing about things she is passionate about. Hopefully, she’ll also figure out what she is to do with her life after graduation.

Many single people may truly feel content about not having an “other half,” but they must admit that the feeling of solitariness grows when Valentine’s Day is near. There’s no shame in longing for the touch of another person on this passionate holiday, but being single doesn’t mean you can’t still have a romantic, candle-lit night in.

the word “Hispanic” is often assumed to equal “Mexican.” In reality, though, Spanish-speakers come from a variety of countries. My family is from Colombia, and as a non-Mexican Hispanic living in East Texas, it’s always been hard to identify myself with kids my age.
