From drab to fab
Welcome to Room 52
The actions of snipping scissors, whirring of sewing machines and decisions of fabrics fill Room 52 as students learn about, not only fashion and how to accessorize, but also how fashion applies to our lives daily.
Texas High’s fashion design class teaches students with an interest in going into the fashion design field or even just fixing a hole in their favorite shirt. Regardless of a student’s intent, they learn things that will be beneficial to them no matter how they plan on utilizing it.
“Fashion design is the art of applying design, aesthetics, clothing construction and natural beauty to clothing and its accessories. It is influenced by culture and different trends, and has varied over time and place,” fashion design teacher Emily Munn said. “In my class we learn about different cultures and their way of dressing and how it is influenced by religion and economic factors, also fashion history, fashion designers and the different fabrics and fibers our clothing is made up of and how it affects us in our daily lives.”
Munn was able to take her love for fashion and accessorizing and turn it into a way to inform students on how they too can take advantage of these skills.
“I have always loved fashion and putting outfits together and changing up my accessories with every outfit I put together. How you accessorize an outfit can take it from drab to fab. Even if I am dressing casual, I still love to add accessories,” Munn said. “I worked in retail for three years at Cavender’s in Dallas before I started teaching fashion at Texas High, and I learned a lot about the fashion industry and how retail works.”
Students love the laid back atmosphere of the class and the freedom they have to complete assignments, applying their own creative style.
“So far it has been a really chill class, so I like the freedom we have when doing our work and that we are able to complete our work at our own pace,” junior Kady Russel said. “I think my favorite is when we get projects. They’re like little arts and crafts projects but, of course, fashion related.”
With the combination of an intriguing topic and a creative way to show one’s self, fashion design is one of the most innovative classes on campus. Not only is the class a funnel for new ideas, but a way to be introspective.
“The clothes we wear say alot about our personality,” Munn said. “I feel like you can really express who you are through the clothes you wear.”
